Multiethnic Studies, Minor
The Multiethnic Studies minor draws on a wide array of courses at Georgian Court University that explore history, culture, and social issues relevant to ethnicity and race within and outside the United States. The minor allows students to gain expertise through interdisciplinary study of diverse social groups, encouraging a comparative approach to understanding ethnicity, race, culture, migration of social groups, and intercultural dynamics. Courses focus on ethnic, indigenous, and immigrant groups predominantly in the United States; coverage of other societies enhances the program’s global perspective. Students also develop communication, analytic, and research skills and the tools for globalized work environments.
A minimum of 18 credits is required for the Multiethnic Studies minor from at least three different disciplines, with no more than 9 credits in one discipline and a minimum of 6 credits at the 300 level or higher. Half of the required courses must be taken at Georgian Court University. Courses can be chosen from the list of approved Multiethnic Studies courses listed below, or students may apply to the chair of the Department of Crime & Justice Studies for approval of a course that is not listed, including study abroad courses if applicable. Courses in the minor may also be used to meet applicable requirements in General Education or in the student’s major(s) or minor(s), subject to rules of those major(s) and minor(s). Africana Studies minor students may not count more than 6 credits for both the Africana Studies minor and the Multiethnic Studies minor.
