English as a Second Language Endorsement, & M.Ed. Option w/Superv. Endorse.
The ESL master’s degree program offers candidates holding a standard New Jersey instructional certificate or its out-of-state equivalent an in-depth study of the educational needs of multilingual learners including teaching strategies and interventions, assessment, second language acquisition theory, and culturally sustaining pedagogy. The program’s focus is on developing 21st-century curricular leadership skills for inclusive schools and districts.
Students who complete the program’s five courses in ESL satisfy the requirements for the NJ endorsement as an ESL teacher. Students who complete the program’s additional 12 credits of courses in school supervision, three credits in research & three credits in multicultural literacy satisfy the requirements for a Master of Education in ESL with Supervisor Endorsement. Following graduation with this master’s degree, candidates will qualify for a Certificate of Eligibility for New Jersey administrative certification as a School Supervisor.
The school supervisor endorsement authorizes the holder to be employed as a supervisor of instruction and athletic director (for those who do not hold a standard principal’s endorsement). The supervisor shall have the authority and responsibility for the continuing direction, evaluation, and guidance of teaching staff members. Please note that at least three years of teaching experience is required in order to apply for NJ state certification as a School Supervisor.
Upon successful completion of the program of studies for English as a Second Language Education, the student will have given evidence of the following outcomes and goals.
- Students will examine the current theories of second language acquisition and culture competence to evaluate different ESL and bilingual instructions.
- Students will design instruction plans and create assessment instruments to teach English language learners.
- Students will apply knowledge and theories to action research and best practices in the teaching profession.
- (Master’s Program) Students will develop advanced professional leadership within the area of services to support students who are ESL learners or who are in a bilingual education program through academic research and program evaluation.
Requirements for Admission
- An earned bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by one of the institutional accreditors previously designated as "regional" accreditors (e.g., Middle States Commission on Higher Education);
- Evidence of a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0; and
- A copy of a valid New Jersey instructional certificate (P–3; K–6; or K–12).
In addition to completing the courses listed below, students must earn a passing score on oral (OPI) and written English proficiency (WPT) examinations by the end of the program.
